I've tested many DVD converters, I even bought a few licenses before I found the link to the freeware HandBrake. It is great application with many features, supporting all kinds of video files and formats.When using the iPhone, I experienced the best option is to use the MPEG4 format, 480 x 320 pixels scale. I am not using the template for the iPods, because it is making a limit of approx. 25 minutes length for the output video file.
It supports Linux, Mac and Windows too.
